African American Folk Art Doll

Handmade African American cloth folk doll, circa 1890–1915. Constructed of hand-sewn and stuffed black cotton stockinette with stitched features and individually formed hands. Dressed in a brown geometric print cotton dress with applied pockets, matching bonnet, and cloth shoes with hand-stitched detailing. A genuine vernacular example of early American folk textile art retaining strong surface wear and untouched character consistent with age and use. Measures 9½ inches in length. A scarce and evocative piece of period Black Americana and American folk art.
