Carved Folk Art Lion Pipe Holder/Match Safe

Exceptional 19th C. folk art carved lion on a base with three baskets at his back. Most likely used as a match safe or pipe holder. Carved from a single piece of walnut, he stands erect, boasting a lovely mane and a tail wrapped around his hind leg. He does not appear ever to have had ears. But this adds to his folky charm. Reminiscent of the lion in the "Peaceable Kingdom" painting.  Measuring 7-1/4" wide by 5-1/4" deep by 6-1/4" tall. Age splits and minor surface imperfections consistent with age. A remarkable piece of Folk Art!
