Flint Lock Striker / Tinder Box (26-038)

Early flint lock mechanism flint striker, Tinder Box. An English type of mechanism that could have been made in either America or England, ca. 1750-1770. A tinder storage compartment is built into the side, along with a small candle socket. Tinder would be placed in the pan below the frizzen. Pull the hammer back to half-cocked, load the pan with tinder, close the frizzen, pull the hammer back to full cock, pull the trigger and the flint strikes the frizzen, flipping it up and creating a spark which ignites the tinder in the pan. The small burning tinder is then used to light the candle, which can then be used at will. The instrument measures approximately 8.5” long x 4.25” high at the frizzen. The piece is complete and in very good working order. Light surface rust on the steel parts and a wonderful patina on the walnut stock.
