Sometimes regarded as a traveling "pill box", this particular 19th century example offers a hard-to-find combination of desirable features. The width is only 2 1/4". There are two, opposing "fingers". The mellowed mustard paint is original, and the condition is exceptional. A graduated stack of small, painted boxes would be enhanced with this rare "top" box.
