Yelloware Flask

A Yellowware flask in a percussion pistol form, Rockingham-type glaze, with the personalized inscription: "William Johnston 1869” and presumed to have been presented to him ca. 1869. The piece is American, likely made by a pottery in either East Liverpool, Ohio, Philadelphia, or Baltimore. Believed to be associated with William H. Johnston, a Civil War veteran from Marietta, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was born in 1828, enlisted at Marietta, Lancaster Co., served as 2nd Lieutenant, Co. H, 135th PA Infantry, and discharged in 1863. He died in York, PA in February 1883 and was buried in the Marietta Cemetery. The reason for the presentation is unknown. The flask is in excellent condition, without any chips, cracks, or repairs. It measures approximately 11 3/8" long, 2 1/8"x 5 1/8" wide. It was found in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, and dates to ca. 1869.
