Paul Phillips I’ve had the good fortune of leading a richly varied and deeply rewarding professional life—as a scientist,
college professor, and longtime student and dealer of early American antiques. My interest in antiques began
nearly 50 years ago, when I started collecting clocks. I was drawn in by the quiet elegance of hand-crafted
movements—amazed that a striking clock could still ring with the same voice it had two centuries ago. These
objects spoke to me.
What began with clock restoration gradually expanded into an appreciation for American primitives and high-
country pieces. Over the years, my focus has continued to evolve, but one thread remains constant: a love for
handmade objects that carry history in their form and function. Today, my attention centers on early lighting
devices and their accessories, utilitarian wooden and metal objects, and the simple beauty of naïve folk
art—especially fraktur-style watercolors and portraits. It’s a diverse collection, and each piece reflects the
enduring spirit of early American craftsmanship.
